During this week the New School encompasses several playful activities with artistic expressions and lots of reading. They are: storytelling, poetry recital, guided exhibition with canvases produced by students and the literary contest, a textual workshop that takes place during Portuguese Language and Literature classes./p>
Every two months, our middle school and high school students are tested on current and general knowledge. It is a test composed of 20 questions and only those who obtain the highest grades in each class are awarded 0.5 point, which is added to their trimestrial averages.
There are questions about music, sports, politics, etc. Students who are keen on reading about current aﬀairs are likely to ace this test.
Last but not least, anyone who does not have the habit of reading newspapers, magazines, books, etc., will then be motivated to start.
The project on professional counselling aims to facilitate the process of student’s choice, oﬀering opportunities for their awareness through paths and strategies which broaden the debate over professional choice, besides favoring self-reﬂection, assisting in the choice of courses and forming a career notion.
In the Escola Nova project, we encourage students to be the authors of their choices, to seek information and references regarding their desired careers, to get to know the information on networks and on the job market. To do this, we oﬀer a debate panel with professionals from diﬀerent areas.
And, there is the "Internship for a day", where students have the opportunity to experience the environment of daily professional practice for a period of time.
The Themed classes are interdisciplinary classes taught by middle and high school specialist teachers ; they take place every trimester and aim to deepen the contents which are being studied. On the day of the class, all grades meet in a diﬀerent environment from classrooms, which sparks a rich and unique moment of plentiful exchange.
In Elementary School, students make a previous research on the theme, in the format of a ﬂipped class, and bring everything they have been able to learn from their own research to school. The topic of the research is then discussed by the class, and as a ﬁnal project, students summarize what they have learned.
In Middle school, themed classes are characterized as school reinforcement, in which diﬀerent modules are oﬀered, with diﬀerent themes and students have the option to attend these classes or not.
At last, in High School, classes emphasize in the preparation for college or University admittance exams.
The Science Fair is a project with the purpose of stimulating students' interest in science. The event involves all school grades, there is always a great commitment from the students and teachers in the development of scientiﬁc activities which culminate in the presentations to the school community.
The Olympic week is an event which involves all school segments. It provides students with opportunities to experience values such as respect, cooperation and team spirit through sports.
Students participate in diﬀerent sports encouraging each other, seeking to overcome their limits and improving their abilities. The involvement of each individual creates a bond with the School. Students start considering the school itself as a teaching-learning environment where socialization occurs in diﬀerent settings.
The stimulus to physical activity and to the practice of sports focuses on self-knowledge and the development of the feeling of conﬁdence. In this manner, Physical Education classes, which are part of the curriculum of all grades, and the school sport events, integrate the Olympic Week.
The Festa Junina (June folk party) is an event that involves the entire school and aims to enrich the students' knowledge of the customs that involve the event, so that they can value these cultural traditions.
OMERJ is a Mathematics competition focused on Middle and High school students in the state of Rio de Janeiro and its goal is the academic development of these students, presenting a more comprehensive and challenging view of mathematics. It is divided into two stages: the ﬁrst, held in schools; the second, at PUC-Rio (Pontiﬁcal Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro).
The Escola Nova Cultural Fair aims to work on interdisciplinarity. Teachers and students select an interesting theme which is developed in school and the outcome is an interactive presentation to their parents.
Every year, all elementary, middle and high school students present projects on a selected topic. It has a unique title, and each subject, as well as each segment, should relate its objectives to the content worked in the classroom.
All parents are the invited to check out the projects on diﬀerent stands.
Escola Nova promotes an event that encourages students to display their skills and talents. The goal is to value creativity, self-esteem, respect and encouragement of art in a general way. On this day, the goal is to favor the interaction and appreciation of others.
The main objective of the Literary groups is to encourage the literary production of Middle and High School students.
It aroused from a demand of the student body itself and the project seeks to enhance, through Literature, the presence of art in the school environment. Weekly meetings are organized with the reading of texts produced by the members of the Literary group followed by debates about the written works of Brazilian and foreign authors.
Throughout the year, the collective production of a book is made and published by Selo Editorial Enova.
Literature allows the production of subjectivity of the students and enables a process of reﬂection on their own condition, making them the subject of their learning, since it is through written texts that a debate about the art of the word is engendered.
The Escola Nova Cinema Festival was designed with the goal of encouraging audiovisual production in the school environment.
From the study of emblematic Brazilian Popular Music albums, students ﬁlm their own video clips, focusin on all the stages of ﬁlm making (script, production, direction, art and assembly).
The climax of the project takes place in a big celebration in the historical Cine Odeon, where the 12 ﬁnalists are exhibited and the most outstanding performances are awarded in several categories.
Extra Mathematics and Physics courses for students who want to see beyond what the regular curriculum oﬀers, for those who want to go further, apart from the classroom.
A project that we perform at the end of the day which is known to be our musical and / or literary event that gathers our students from 8th grade to high school, to promote the social and cultural integrity of our students.
